The League of Women Voters of Michigan (LWVM) will celebrate its 100th year at its annual convention May 17-19 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Livonia. The event coincides with the 100th anniversary of suffrage for women.
“For the past 100 years, the League of Women Voters of Michigan has been dedicated to empowering voters and defending democracy by providing nonpartisan voter information and advocacy,” said Judy Karandjeff, LWVM president. “We are proud of our work on vital issues concerning democracy and voter rights, and our annual convention is an opportunity for hundreds of LWVM members to connect, learn and grow.”
The convention will feature several speakers, including Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib from Michigan’s 13 district.
LWVM will also celebrate the recent U.S. Circuit Court decision that protects voters and ensures district lines represent voters accurately. The organization was the lead plaintiff in League of Women Voters v. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a gerrymandering case that resulted in court-ordered redistricting ahead of the 2020 election.
“We supported Proposal 3 – ‘Promote the Vote’ – which was passed by Michigan voters last November,” Karandjeff said. “This proposal ensures that every eligible person can vote and that every vote will be counted. It safeguards our elections with audits and more accurate voting lists and removes barriers that can make it harder for citizens to fulfill their responsibility to vote.”
The convention is hosted by League of Women Voters of Northwest Wayne County, which services the communities of Belleville, Sumpter and Van Buren. About 200 attendees are expected to attend the convention.
