Van Buren Township Police were dispatched to the fairgrounds just before 11 p.m. Saturday, May 7, where a large birthday party was being held and there were sounds like gunshots or fireworks going off.
Six cars were reported speeding out of the fairgrounds onto Quirk Road and then south to the I-94 N. Service Dr. Police reportedly arrived quickly and asked the people left at the party to leave the fairgrounds and they did.
VBT Police Lt. Charles Bazzy said that the noises heard may have been fireworks since an employee at the fairgrounds reported seeing something looking like fireworks being tossed from a car.
Lt. Bazzy said police have not found any bullet holes in anything or any shell casing or injuries to indicate there was gunplay.
Lt. Bazzy asks any residents with evidence from that evening to share it with police to help with the investigation. Call (734) 699-8930 with information.
Social media reports have stated people were shooting out of cars at one another. One nearby resident reported picking up bullet casings and, after a few days she reportedly turned them over to police.
According to the police dispatch report released Monday, complaints of fireworks and/or gunshots were reported at several locations that evening, ending up with the fairgrounds.
The dispatch log recorded shots fired at 9:12 p.m. on Fairbanks St., fireworks at 9:13 p.m. on Jackson St., 10:46 and 10:53 p.m. shots fired at fairgrounds/Quirk Rd., and at 11:15 p.m., noise complaint on Ashbury.
