At the Oct. 11 meeting of the Keystone Academy Board of Directors, Keystone Principal Keturah Godfrey told a story about about a Keystone second grader named Makaela whose cancer came back after two years of treatment and the parents were given a choice of more chemotherapy, that had an uncertain result, or amputation of her leg.
Amputation of her left leg was the day of the board meeting.
Godfrey said the second graders got together to order her an American Girl doll with a prosthetic leg. Channel 4 came out to cover the story a week earlier.
“The community really rallied behind her,” Godfrey said.
Students at Keystone wore gold or yellow shirts with jeans on the day of the surgery to support Makaela. She reportedly came through the surgery well and will be entering physical therapy.
There is a GoFundMe account for The Mighty Makaela and also a raffle is under way for a seven-night stay at the Gulfview Manor Resort in Fort Myers Beach, FL. The package was donated by Jaiden Dixon and Timothy Frost. All proceeds go to Makaela’s family. Tickets are $5 each or three for $12 and are available at Keystone, Egan’s Pub, Garden Fantasy, or by calling (734) 476-7682.
