Keystone Academy in Sumpter Township won the 2021 Metro Detroit’s Best & Brightest Companies to Work For award for the second year in a row.
Keystone Principal Jorvanna Drain told the Keystone Board of Directors at a recent meeting that out of thousands of entries, Keystone was chosen as one of the winners.
The Service Center nominated Keystone for the award and completed an application that included the school’s data. The winning criteria is heavily based on the staff engagement survey results pertaining to communication, recognition, culture and more, Drain said.
In other business at a recent meeting, the board:
• Approved a resolution to relinquish federal funds for Title III Immigrant Student Allocations because Keystone only qualifies for $236 total and it costs more than that just to handle the money. Whatever needs the immigrant students have are handled with other funds; and
• Heard Drain announce there were currently 658 students at Keystone. The percentage of white students has dropped from 71% to 68% and the free and reduced lunch students have risen from 42% to 46%, with the other local district at 51%. The top districts of Keystone student residences are: Van Buren Public Schools, 58%; Lincoln Consolidated, 22%; Romulus Community, 6%; and Wayne-Westland and Ypsilanti Community Schools, both 2%.
