On Feb. 22, a Wayne County Circuit Court Jury found James Forrest Chapman, 58, guilty of the felony charge of jumping in Belleville Lake to evade police.
The trial was before Judge Margaret Van Houten. Chapman took the stand in his own defense.
He has been referred to probation for a pre-sentence report. Judge Van Houten will sentence him on March 22. A probation violation hearing will also be held that same day.
The charge against Chapman was assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer in Van Buren Township on June 13, 2016. The maximum sentence is not more than two years or a fine of not more than $2,000 or both.
The attendant misdemeanor charge of refusing to provide a DNA sample when arrested on a felony was dismissed.
Upon conviction of the felony, however, Chapman provided a DNA sample.
