Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ceremoniously signed House Bills 5056 and 5058 into law at the new Van Buren Township Community Center on Aug. 14. The bipartisan legislation provides for the new fundraising 4-H license plates that will earn money for the 4-H Foundation to bring support for 4-H.
The initial speaker at the event, Van Buren Township Treasurer Sharry Budd, said her family has supported 4-H for decades and her father-in-law helped start the Wayne County 4-H.
Also speaking was Quinton Tyler, director of the Michigan State University Extension, Van Buren Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara, and State Representative Reggie Miller, D-Van Buren Township, who with Matt Bierlein, R-Tuscola County, championed the bills.
Members of Wayne County 4-H recited the 4-H Pledge and then gathered around for a picture with the governor. Also present were members of the Wayne County Fair staff and elected representatives from Van Buren and Sumpter townships and the city of Belleville. U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell was present to support 4-H.
