The flower box at Five Points in Belleville was damaged the week end of June 8 when a vehicle being pursued by Sumpter Township Police crashed into it, crumbling the stones that are part of the city’s streetscape.
Belleville Police Chief Hal Berriman said a Belleville officer put out stop sticks in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle but the sticks only hit one tire, so the vehicle went out of control and hit the flower box.
Chief Berriman said the vehicle just missed the new outdoor sculpture that had been put in place the week before and missed a pole. The flowers around the sculpture had been planted the night before the crash.
