Every year there is a summer weekend when we raise our eyes to the heavens. And it’s here again: the annual air show at Willow Run Airport.
Thunder Over Michigan, presented by the Wayne County Airport Authority, is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with the air shows beginning at 10 a.m. each day with a break from noon to 2 p.m.
The Viper Pit is celebrating 50 years of the iconic F-16 Fighting Falcon, including a performance by the USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team. Lots of demonstrations.
There are all kinds of aircraft to see on the ground, including planes from World War I forward.
People who don’t want to pay the price and fight the heavy traffic into and out of the airport, get on their boats and go out into Belleville Lake to watch the show. Or, they go to the former Kmart shopping center and park their cars and bring out their coolers. Or, just sit in their yards and watch the show.
Last year there was a crash and pilots parachuted into the lake with minimal injuries. Pieces of plane were all over an apartment complex. Lots of excitement.
We live in a special kind of town. Aircraft over the weekend and then, on Monday, people come from many miles around to display old, new, and special cars for the summer’s Main Street car show. Our streets are full of cars to marvel over. But then, sometimes it rains.
