Sumpter Township Police Chief James Pierce, Jr. has retired as of Feb. 9. His request to retire was a part of the Supervisor’s report at Tuesday’s regular Sumpter Township meeting.
Pierce has been chief for almost 13 years and board members praised his work in putting together a professional department and his commitment to being present at any public event in the township.
“The chief was always there,” said Supervisor John Morgan.
After accepting his letter of retirement the board appointed Captain Eric Luke as interim chief.
Then the board approved a letter of understanding with MAFF, the fire department union, that lays out the details of Fire Chief Joe Januszyk’s 8-month leave of absence to go to school full time for his chief’s position. Deputy Chief Rick Brown will be interim chief during the chief’s absence, will get the chief’s pay, and then will return to the union once the chief comes back.
The resignations of Chris Hamm from the planning commission and fire department also were accepted, with regrets, and Donald LaPorte, Jr. was reinstated in the fire department after a short leave of absence to prepare for his public safety officer’s position in Farmington. Lots of shuffling around in Sumpter Township these days.

So is it an 8-month paid leave for Fire Chief Joe Januszyk, or is the leave unpaid?
I just checked and it’s an 8-month chief’s paid leave for Chief Januszyk because the township asked him to go to school. The interim chief will also get chief’s pay while he is filling in as chief. So, the township will be paying two chief’s pays for the next 8 months.
