At about 4:40 a.m. Sunday, July 26, a drunk driver ran through a barricade on Main Street in Belleville and T-boned a frozen gelato truck, set up for the week end’s Artaffair on Main event.
Then, the driver pulled away and drove off.
Belleville Police chief Hal Berriman said Officer Aldrich spotted the car and alerted Officer Jeff Wickham, who just came on duty.
A citizen called police, as well, to report the drunk driver. Officer Wickham pulled the car over on Sumpter Road near Bemis. The engine was “smoking,” causing the driver to have to drive with his head out the window.
Chief Berriman said the driver was booked on drunk driving charges, but he would not release the young man’s name until after he was arraigned.
The driver reportedly was driving a family member’s vehicle.
