Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano was in town on Nov. 16 to bring ten frozen turkeys to Open Arms Lutheran Church for its Thanksgiving ministry.
From left are Van Buren Township Supervisor Paul White, Ficano, Open Arms Ministry Administrator Beverly Conry and Pastor James Richert. Ficano said the turkeys came from the donations of Wayne County Employees and he was distributing turkeys throughout the county. His next stop was Romulus Senior Center. Ficano said the employees have been doing this every year since he was sheriff and this is all part of a safety net for county residents. Conry said Open Arms was providing 25 local families with Thanksgiving dinners and she was going shopping for 15 more turkeys and all the trimmings from church donations. She said A&W lets the church use its freezer to store the frozen turkeys, which are distributed the Saturday before Thanksgiving to give the families time to properly thaw the birds before roasting.
