Pastor Nathaniel Oregon of the Belleville 7th-Day Adventist Church reported to the Belleville City Council on Monday that the free health services offered to local residents totaled up to $79,000 worth of help.
His church sponsored the event on Feb. 24 at Edgemont Elementary School with more than 80 volunteers. Fifteen dental chairs were set up and seven or eight dentists and the same number of hygienists served the 129 people who came.
There were 118 x-rays, 62 people had their teeth cleaned, 51 had teeth extracted (with one person having eight teeth pulled) and 27 fillings.
There also were 60 eye exams and 55 pairs of glasses will be delivered. Eighteen had hearing screening and one was referred for a hearing aid. The Belleville Lions Club volunteered at the event.
Pastor Oregon said they are able to get glasses for $10 each and, with the help of the Lions Club and his church, the people will get their glasses free.
Free children’s clothing was distributed.
Pastor Oregon pointed out that White Pine Dental of Belleville gives back to the community. Dr. DeAngelo Webster and his wife, also a dentist, volunteered their services for the event.
Pastor Oregon said he would like to do the event next year, as well, but that will be up to his church board.
Councilman Jack Loria, who lives near Edgemont Elementary School, said the parking lot at the school was packed with cars all day of the event.
