Ahjea Myco Holmes, 17, and his cousin Mario Rudo Holmes, 17, will have their preliminary exams on Jan. 13 before 34th District Court Judge Brian Oakley on charges tied to the assault of a Belleville Police Officer at Belleville High School during a fight.
They were before 34th District Court Chief Judge Tina Brooks Green on Dec. 30 for their probable cause conferences.
Ahjea had been lodged in the Wayne County Jail on $50,000/10% bail since his arrest Dec. 15 at Belleville High School where BHS was playing Dearborn in basketball.
He is charged with two counts of possession of narcotics or cocaine (less than 25 grams), one count of possession of marijuana, and one count of assault and battery.
Mario was out after posting his bond of $20,000/10% on charges of assaulting a police officer and assault and battery.
The Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor told Judge Green the bonds were so high because all this happened at BHS.
Court-appointed attorney Gary Jones is Ahiea’s attorney and he said the high bond is to protect the community and to make sure the defendant doesn’t miss his court date.
Jones said Ahiea isn’t a danger to the community and the court could place Ahiea on a GPS tether to monitor his movement. He pointed out that that seven family members were present in the courtroom to support him and they are a church-going family.
They said he was doing on-line courses.
When Judge Green asked him why he was at BHS that day, he said he was going to watch his little brother play basketball.
Ahiea said he had spent 13 days in jail and it was pointed out he missed the celebration of Christmas.
Judge Green asked the family to stand up and Ahiea was directed to turn around and look at them. For Judge Green, they identified themselves as his mother, father, grandmother, uncle, cousins, and brother.
“You have disappointed them,” Judge Green said to Ahiea. “If I release you on a tether, these people will have a chance to work with you.”
“Sorry it happened,” a family member called out from the back of the courtroom.
“Everything happens for a reason,” Judge Green responded, adding, “You have a chance to grab ahold of his collar and get him on the right track.”
She ordered him released on GPS tether, which meant he had to go back to the county jail where the tether will be arranged.
A family member said, “We live in the country and he’ll enjoy his house arrest at home.” They live in Ypsilanti Township.
Judge Green warned him not to return to BHS.
Most of the family then left the courtroom, but some stayed to support Ahjea’s cousin Mario Holmes. Court-appointed attorney David Lankford filled in for Mario’s attorney, telling the family in the courtroom to come back in two weeks when Mario and Ahjea will have their preliminary exams together on Jan. 13.
Mario’s attorney will be seeking the Belleville Police Department video of the alleged assault. Belleville Police said Mario, a student at Ypsilanti Lincoln schools, head-butted Cpl. Todd Schrecengost as he and Cpl. Chris Faull were breaking up a fight.
Cpl. Schrecengost sought medical attention at a hospital for the cut on his forehead.
Belleville Police Chief Hal Berriman said there were two separate incidents at BHS that day. He said Cpls. Schrecengost and Faull were at BHS and two young men started fighting right in front of the officers. The officers broke it up and were placing the two in the scout car when another right broke out.
When they went to break that fight up, one fighter jerked his head up and head-butted Schrecengost, Chief Berriman said.
Cpl. Faull is the officer in charge of the case.
Robert Kristopher Stilson
Robert Kristopher Stilson, 26, of Saginaw, remains lodged in the Wayne County Jail on $500,000/10% bond on four felony charges stemming from the Halloween 2014 stabbing at the Sumpter roller rink.
Stilson is charged with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with intent to commit bodily harm less than murder, armed robbery, and felonious assault.
His probable cause conference was set for Dec. 30 before Judge Green. But his court-appointed attorney Mark Magidson asked for more time and so the hearing was adjourned until Jan. 13 before Judge Oakley. At that time, Magidson said he will ask for a reduction in bond.
Sumpter Township Police Det. John Toth is the officer in charge of the case. There were three co-defendants in this melee at the Sumpter roller rink on Oct. 31, 2014. The first one, Ralph Rosas, also of Saginaw, was charged with the same charges as Stilson and a jury found him guilty of all, but one of the charges. He is serving 18.75-50 years in prison. The third co-defendant remains at large and is actively being sought.
Daniel Gustaf Miles
Daniel Gustaf Miles, 32, had his probable cause conference set for Dec. 30 and instead demanded his preliminary exam on Jan. 6. He is out on $5,000/10% bond on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and felony firearm for an incident in Van Buren Township on Dec. 20. VBT Det. Ken Toney is the officer in charge of the case.
Melvin Harles Evans, III
Melvin Harles Evans, III, 32, waived his preliminary exam on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon (felonious assault) and was bound over to circuit court for an arraignment on the information on Jan. 13.
He was out after posting $5,000/10% bond. The incident occurred Dec. 13 in Van Buren Township. Det. Mark Buxton is the officer in charge. David Lankford took over for the court-appointed defense attorney on the case.
Judge Green noted Evans had some civil infractions in the past and “owes us a boat load of money,” $1,500 to be exact. A payment plan will be set up for him on that matter.
