As part of the annual air show at Willow Run Airport, there will be a Battle for Belleville military vehicle display and World War II battle reenactment on Aug. 28 in downtown Belleville.
At the July 20 meeting of the Belleville City Council, Michael Luther from the Yankee Air Museum explained his plans and the council approved them.
Luther said instead of having a parade, as in past years, a military vehicle display will start at 6 p.m. and a battle reenactment will start at 6:30 p.m.
Main Street will be closed between Fifth and Third streets. Also closed will be Roys and Fourth streets, from Main Street to the alley behind the museum.
Luther said Main, Roys, and Fourth streets would need to be clear of parked vehicles while the vehicle display and battle reenactment are in progress. Closing time for activities is 7:30 p.m., when the vehicles are expected to convoy back to Willow Run Airport.
The Battle for Belleville is expected to continue during the air show activities at Willow Run Airport.
In other business at the July 20 meeting, the council:
• Heard an estimate of $32,500 from an engineer for the cost of renovating the Veterans’ Memorial and voted to do so. Cornell Anton came forward with the original plans for the memorial and shared them with the city for study;
• Approved developing specifications and going out for quotes for the city computer system, with a bid opening of Aug. 17;
• Discussed signage for the new canoe/kayak launch at Horizon Park and gave Downtown Development Authority Coordinator Carol Thompson ideas for the signs;
• Approved the agreement assigning the wholesale customer water service contract from the City of Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Great Lakes Water Authority;
• Approved the bond-authorizing resolution for 2015 capital improvement bonds (limited tax general obligation) in the amount not to exceed $550,000 to pay all or part of the cost of acquiring and constructing improvements to the city’s sewage disposal system. The project qualifies for the state’s Revolving Fund being administered by the Michigan Finance Authority and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, where the city bonds are sold to the Authority and bear interest at a fixed rate of 2.5% per annum; and
• Approved accounts payable of $104,743.09, which included $39.99 repair of a watch owned by Officer Jeff Wickham that was broken during an arrest, and $10,000 to the Belleville Area Museum. Also listed was a request for prior approval for a departmental purchase in excess of $500 to All Seasons for a mower replacement for $8,649 to replace a worn-out riding mower.
