The Canton Lions will be raising funds needed throughout the communities of Belleville and Canton April 26 through May 5.
The club will be working at the L. George’s Coney Island on Michigan Ave., Holiday Market on Lilley Road and Cherry Hill, and Wal-Mart on Ford Rd and Lotz.
They also will be found in the streets of Belleville during their upcoming White Cane Week spent raising money to help the blind.
The Lions are assisting people in both communities during these tough economic times.
They are called on to purchase many pairs of eye glasses for children whose parents cannot afford to buy them. They also sponsor a scholarship program which allows for the sight-impaired to attend college.
These programs, along with Penrickton Center for Blind and Handicapped Children, Michigan Eye Bank, Leader Dog School for the Blind, and Seedlings, which writes Braille books, are a few of the organizations to which the club contributes.
According to Larry Wegrzyn, president of the Canton Lions Club, it takes many fund-raising events for the Lions Club to assist those in need. He said the club’s fund raisers include a Euchre Tournament, Pancake Breakfast at the Canton Liberty Fest, and Corn Roast in August during the Canton’s Village Faire. The Lions are dependent on the public’s contributions to complete all these worthy projects.
Wegrzyn said, “We’re beginning our White Cane Week, which is our spring project, allowing the Lions to renew with the public the various needs the blind and hearing impaired have in life. It may be a low-vision reader or a cataract operation for the sight-impaired.
“The hearing-impaired need hearing aids or a hearing phone which allows them to have contact with their family and friends,” Wegrzyn said.
The Canton Lions Club is a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs, he said.
