Starting with the 2019-20 school year, Lincoln Consolidated Schools will begin offering free breakfast and lunch to all K-5 students enrolled at Brick Elementary.
Based on the current free and reduced lunch rate at the Title I school, any students attending will be eligible to receive their meals free of charge under the National School Lunch program.
“A large portion of our students are already eligible under income guidelines for free or reduced meals,” said School Supt. Sean McNatt. “Under the provisions of the program, it just made sense to expand free meals to include all of the students attending the building.”
The Community Eligibility Provision through the USDA is designed to make it easier for low-income children to receive meals through the National School Lunch Program. By streamlining the eligibility and enrollment process, no additional application is required to provide much-needed nutrition assistance to children in need, he said.
“Students perform better on every level when they’re not worried about their next meal,” said Brick Elementary Principal Paula Robinette. “If we can do one thing for our students to make learning easier, why wouldn’t we do it?”
Lincoln Consolidated Schools serve more than 3,600 students from southeast Washtenaw and southwest Wayne counties.
Supt. McNatt said the district’s mission is to provide an exemplary educational experience where students develop the foundation for lifelong learning.
