Ashley Hollar of Belleville has filed a lawsuit against Walmart and Caito Foods after she said she contracted Salmonella by eating pre-cut watermelon she bought at the Van Buren Township Walmart.
She said she woke up on May 25 in severe pain and later tested positive for Salmonella. She was put on antibiotics, but then got sick again.
She had bought another container of watermelon, not realizing the connection to her illness, and ate some more.
Her problems were traced to the pre-cut watermelon and she learned dozens across the country also had been infected with Salmonella, allegedly from Caito Foods of Indianapolis, which has recalled the melon.
The CDC said 60 people have been infected with more than half of them in Michigan.
Hollar’s attorney is Jory Lange, a national food safety attorney.
