Michael Caulk, 64, a social studies teacher at Belleville High School, was found dead in his classroom and so BHS was closed for the day on Thursday (June 13).
Belleville Police Chief Gene Taylor said the teacher was believed to have died from natural causes. An autopsy was pending.
Chief Taylor said the family called Belleville Police Wednesday night at 10:50 and officers found him in his classroom around 11 p.m.
Caulk, who lived in Saline, reportedly did not come home after school on Wednesday.
Van Buren Public Schools Superintendent Michael VanTassel released a statement on Thursday afternoon referring to Caulk as “a committed and dedicated teacher at Belleville High School.”
According to his posting on the internet, Caulk had been at BHS since August 2002. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in History, Speech & Communications.
Caulk’s son Jamie Caulk died Oct. 20, 2011 from injuries of a car accident. Doctors determined he had had a massive stroke, made worse by a condition he had had since birth, in which blood flow to the brain was uneven in the two arteries.
