Dennis Roy of Belleville was fishing in Houghton Lake (Roscommon County) with his granddaughter when he landed a tagged fish in the Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau’s Catch Us If You Can fishing contest.
“We are very pleased Dennis caught one of the more than 100 fish tagged in Houghton Lake, Lake St. Helen, and Higgins Lake,” said Dave Clouse, president of the tourism bureau.
“This is our 10th anniversary and we are celebrating it in a big way with a chance to win $250,000 and a new Lund boat from Spicer’s Boat City, a major contest sponsor.”
Roy caught the 8-inch bluegill on July 29 while staying at an area resort. His catch was verified at contest sponsor Lyman’s on the Lake and he received a $50 gas card for bringing the tag in.
Anglers can bring their tagged fish in for verification at Lyman’s, North Winds Lodge at Higgins Lake, and Trail’s End Motel in St. Helen.
“I have been fishing Houghton Lake for nearly 25 years,” Roy said. “We have been very successful fishing this year, and it is really exciting to catch the tagged fish.”
He is eligible for the drawing in April 2016 at Spicer’s Boat City for the grand prize of $250,000 and a Lund boat. There is a guaranteed major prize of $500 cash and $500 in prizes.
Also sponsoring the fishing contest are a number of local businesses including Best Choice Market and Beachfront Hotel.
To celebrate and promote the fishing contest there will be a Fry-In co-sponsored by the HLATB and the Roscommon Area Pilots Association at Blodgett Airport August 15 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. The public is invited to the cod dinner at $9/plate, fly-in, and displays from area businesses.
For more information on the contest and Fry-In, contact the HLATB office at 1-989-422-2002, 1-800-676-5330 or email [email protected].
