Tebria Taylor Vaughn, 12, won the 2018 Great Lakes Regional Dance Masters Junior Miss Dance title on March 3 in Dearborn.
Tebria studies dance at P&P Dance Centre in Belleville, where Michelle Sypula is the director and owner.
At the contest, Tebria had to compete in four audition classes — ballet, tap, jazz, and acrobatics. There was also a three-minute interview and a dance solo.
For her solo, Tebria performed an open jazz dance routine entitled “Swagger,” choreographed by Tiffani Stewart. Tebria had top scores in the audition classes as well as the dance solo.
She has been dancing since she was four years old. Her first dance experience began with the Ypsilanti Township Recreation Department. She later, at the age of eight, pursued a more advanced dance training at P&P Dance Centre.
“I love all genres of dance, but my absolute favorite style is jazz because I get to show my sassy side and it’s really fun,” Tebria said.
“It’s always great to see the audience drawn into your performance and grooving to the music while I am dancing.”
She is currently a sixth-grade honor roll student at Lincoln Middle School in Ypsilanti Township. She is the daughter of Brian and Teiryne Vaughn and the older sister to Tiana Vaughn, a first grader at Childs Elementary School in Ypsilanti Township.
Tebria will represent Michigan’s Great Lakes Regional Chapter 46 at the Dance Masters of America National Competition this July in New Orleans.
