Dear Keystone Academy Parents / Guardians, and the Community:
At Keystone Academy we strive to make moral focus an integral part of our school culture. Not only do we take the time to discuss traits such as compassion, gratitude, and respect, among others, we also look for opportunities in which we can live these traits out.
Our school has the opportunity right now to live out the traits of compassion and gratitude in a tangible way. As many of you have seen in the news, the Flint area is experiencing a water crisis due to contaminated pipes. They are only able to use bottled water.
We have two sister schools in the Flint community – Linden Charter Academy and Burton Glen Charter Academy. Although both schools are located outside of the affected area, there are 1,266 students, a combined 86% of their enrollment, who live in the contaminated zones and are in need of good water. While this is a hot topic issue right now, the need to find and sustain drinkable water, and a way to bathe as well as wash clothes free from contamination, is a long-term challenge.
To show compassion for those in need and gratitude for the drinking water we have available to us, Keystone is joining National Heritage Academies in a bottled water drive to support these families. We will collect bottled water in cases, or purified water in gallon jugs, at the school. On Friday, Feb. 19, a truck will collect the water and transport it to Flint for use by these families.
Keystone Academy is also partnering with CMAC Transportation who has graciously offered to volunteer their trucks to help transport the bottled water. In addition to dropping water off at the school, the following community locations are accepting water donations:
• Belleville Area District Library, 167 Fourth Street, Belleville; and
• Wayne County Community College District, 9555 Haggerty Road, Belleville.
If you are interested in joining the cause, please have your donation to the front office by the morning of Friday, Feb. 19. Please also feel free to let your family and friends know of the drop-off locations should they wish to participate. All are welcome!
Thank you for taking the time to consider helping others who are in need. It is a privilege to serve a school community that is open to hearing about the needs of others and isn’t afraid to act.
If you have any questions, please contact the office at (734) 697-9470.
Sincerely,
Keturah Godfrey, Principal
