A two-vehicle crash at the corner of Rawsonville and Bemis roads shortly after 4 p.m. on Feb. 18 resulted in a woman passenger being cut out of her car with Jaws of Life and airlifted to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Ypsilanti Township fire fighters said icy roads played a part in the crash and would hinder ambulances and fire trucks getting to the scene, so they called for the helicopter.
The drivers of the car and the truck exited their vehicles without help.
The woman was in her 40s and appeared to have moderate injuries. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Besides Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputies, police on the scene included those from Sumpter and Van Buren townships. Fire departments from Ypsilanti and Van Buren townships also were present.
Reports of Rawsonville Road being closed at Bemis were on Nixel alerts from Washtenaw County and broadcast on radio and TV.
The Rawsonville/Bemis intersection marks the boundary lines for Van Buren, Sumpter, Augusta, and Ypsilanti townships. Rawsonville Road is the boundary for Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
