At its March 25 regular meeting, the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education decided to take no action on a part of School Supt. Van Tassel’s rolling contract that automatically gives him another year on the job if the board doesn’t take action.
As of April 1, Supt. Van Tassel will automatically have his position confirmed for the 2014-15 school year, in addition to the 2013-14 year. The superintendent position is renewed two years in advance.
Board Treasurer Sherry Frazier pointed out that Van Tassel is not taking a salary cut like the teachers are being asked to take and, actually, he is getting an increase.
His contract calls for $137,000 for this school year, plus a $2,000 raise to $139,000 as of July 1.
Board President Brent Mikulski said Van Tassel said he would take a cut.
Van Tassel confirmed that he would be willing to make a voluntary cut in his salary after the teachers’ salary is determined.
Trustee Scott Russell said if the board does nothing that evening, the contract would roll over. If someone on the board changes his or her mind and wants to discuss the contract, that person could get a second person to ask for a special meeting before April 1 and they could meet and discuss.
Russell praised Van Tassel for “leadership by example”.
An item on the agenda for approval of the Van Buren Education Association teachers’ union contract was removed by President Mikulski at the beginning of the meeting.
Mikulski and Van Tassel explained that the contract was not ready for a board vote because it needed to be ratified by the teachers and it failed in the teachers’ vote earlier Monday.
The board planned to discuss the contract negotiations in closed session at the end of the meeting, as allowed under the Open Meetings Act.
The board also approved spending some
of the bond funds left over from the building of Belleville High School. They approved:
• $60,468 for seven additional pin-on microphone systems for BHS teachers, so that every classroom (except gym) will have enhanced sound. The cost was locked in by a 2009 bid, said Paul Wills of Plante Moran CRESA, who made the proposal to the board;
• $99,788.74 for tables, umbrellas, fences and landscaping (including some relocation of new trees) for the Commons area outdoor patio and the outside courtyard next to the auditorium. The patio was included in the original design, but not constructed until the availability of funds for amenities was determined. Wills said Wayne County, state parks, and the Metro Park system also were using the tables selected for BHS; and
• $148,587 to Marshall Music Company (high bidder) for musical instruments, including eight trumpets, six tubas, six flutes, five Bb clarinets, five trombones, four bassoons, four alto saxophones, three oboes, and one each of a rosewood marimba and 2.5 pro bells with rolling stand. Some of the current instruments are more than 40 years old.
Wills also reported that the Sinking Fund is financing extra parking at Rawsonville and Edgemont schools, a new roof at Owen (with bids ready to come in), glass and glazing at various schools, along with security entrances at schools.
In other business at its March 25 meeting, the board:
• Approved the April 8 employment termination of teacher Stephanie Stojanovski of McBride after 13 years of service, for personal reasons;
• Heard presentations from the principals of Owen Intermediate and Belleville High School, outlining their programs;
• Approved the minutes of the March 13 open session following a closed-door disciplinary hearing that showed a vote of 6-1 (Frazier voting no) that expelled a student for an unstated infraction;
• Heard Frazier ask questions about four different checks written to pay for various items and got answers. She was advised by Secretary Kevin English that it would give employees more time to get answers to her questions if she would ask before the meeting, but she insisted it was her right to ask the questions. She questioned the $500 per day paid to Carnegie Math consultant Nicole Crockett and was told that was for 10.5 days per month; and
• Heard parent Shannon Ackron speak of her many concerns about her children’s education. She had sent emails to board members after not being satisfied with her treatment after following the chain of command. Ackron was especially irritated with comments from teachers who said there was “a paper shortage in the district” and one couldn’t run off her ill high school son’s homework because of the paper problem, which caused him to be marked down in class. She also wanted to know how much was lost in the furniture and equipment destroyed when the old BHS was demolished. She tried to get the information with a Freedom of Information Act request, but was told there were no documents on that. She listed other problems and called school leadership “despicable”. She said that Board Vice President Martha Toth sent her an email saying she had “crossed a line” by saying leadership was despicable. President Mikulski asked Ackron to give Van Tassel and the staff time to collect information she wanted, adding her email was lengthy and they are working on it. “It’s unfortunate we have to allow these kinds of issues to fester with parents,” said Frazier, adding that had Van Tassel addressed the problem in the first place, it wouldn’t have escalated. “The buck stops with him…” she said.

Is it a school board member job to always protect and support the teacher’s union? No way. That is not why they were elected, and is directly in opposition of their oath of office. With no unions,charter schools aren’t held in stranglehold by school board members like Sherry Frazer. Frazer needs to examine her reasons for being on the board. President Mikulski, do your job, protect our school district and hold her accountable. And voters, next school election, it is time to stand up and protect our students. Frazer, and probably Mikulski need to go.
Dan, could you please provide examples to support your allegations? My district employee friends, and I have many, are all frustrated with the negative way the district is being run. We believe Sherry is speaking for many of us.
See my comments below about your unethical friends on the school board.
Kudos to Scott Russell for his praise of the Superintendent. Mr. Van Tassell is doing a fine job, and the school district is actually turning around. In these troubled economic times, anyone who can keep moving ahead and making change, for kids, should be lauded. My congratulations to Van Tassell.
Again, please provide examples. What I see and hear is that Mr. Van Tassell is repressive and a bully. If “turning around” means going downhill, then you are accurate. We have lost many professionals who have gone to districts where they are appreciated and we will lose more. Mr. Van Tassell’s style is the primary reason.
Another one gone this month from McBride. I think that makes 5 for the year. Thank you Amy for speaking up.
I agree with Ms. Otzman who says there are problems on the board. I attended the last meeting, and it is obvious that Frazier is an out of control board member, who doesn’t support the district, but just supports her friends. As a parent, I can honestly say I didn’t know how bad the district actually was until Mike Van Tassel stepped in and started to turn it around. We often get complacent…things gradually get worse and worse and don’t realize how bad it is until it is too late. I am very happy that we now have a leader with vision, with standards and with goals. My congratulations to the board members who supported Van Tassel for superintendent. I pray you board members who did not support him (Frazer, Mikulski and Russel) realize that you avoided an absolute disaster by the skin of your teeth. My hope is that the school board rookies start being accountable. And that includes you Sherri Frazier.
Dear Parent,
Perhaps you could also list how Mr. Van Tassell is doing such a great job?
I don’t think parents need to list his recent accomplishments, they’ve been in the papers for months!
See my comments below about the nepotism on this school board. Shameful!
“…I pray you board members who did not support him (Frazer, Mikulski and Russel) realize that you avoided an absolute disaster by the skin of your teeth.”
I believe all seven school board members voted to hire the Superintendent. They DID support him.
THERE ARE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE WITH DIARREHA OF THE MOUTH. THEY LATCH ON TO EVERY NUTCASE OUT THERE TO GET THEIR NAME IN THE PAPERS. PLEASE NEWSPAPERS STOP REPORTING WHAT THEY SAY UNLESS IT IS TRUE AND NEWSWORTHY. YOU ARE FEEDING THEIR CONSTANT NEED FOR ATTENTION. IT HURTS OUR COMMUNITY IMAGE TO SEE THIS KIND OF
BEHAVIOR BY OUR ELECTED PEOPLE. NO WONDER NO ONE WANTS TO BRING A BUSINESS HERE OR MOVE HERE. MY MONEY IS ON CHARTER SCHOOLS AS THEY DON’T PUT UP WITH THIS GARBAGE. OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY IS BETTER THAN THIS AND NEED PEOPLE WITH PERSONAL INTEGRITY LEADING THEM.
First Amendment, Constitution of United States. Read it sometime and take your caps lock off.
I am fairly certain their caps lock were on because they are yelling at you out of frustration at your blind loyalty to a world (thankfully!) long gone!
Is this printed correctly – that Marshall Music was the HIGH bidder and we accepted it? what’s with that?
I agree that the use of the work “despicable” is unfortunate, but the truth is that parents are not happy with this administration. It is very frustrating that the Board continues on without recognizing there are problems.
I would like to know why my comments were deleted. Is Mr. Van Tassell running your paper now?
I doubt it but he appears to have minions posting his praises like this hilarious fiction: “he displayed nothing but professionalism, good humor, and interest in the students while in my room.”
Rex and Amy crack me up! Clearly you two knuckleheads “know” what is going on. Keep up the good writing Rex. The fiction and delusion genres are my favorite!
Van Buren District employees have been asked to take a 12% pay cut to pay for a ridiculous lawsuit filed by a disgruntled employee. How interesting that the worker and their (retired ex govt employee) spouse just bought a home in Florida and are now filing suit. How convenient…what a nice way to retire to the south. This is outrageous..I can’t afford to feed my kids, but the highest paid and laziest employee ever to work in the district will come out of this with a settlement at my expense. Yet both of them are already sucking at the government teat. Worse, they are bragging about it. Outrageous. it would be funny if I wasn’t already in tears as I can’t pay my bills.
Don’t let them blame everything on some lawsuit. The state continues to play a shell game with funding. Also blame the district for hiring new teachers and starting some of them out at step 10 of the pay scale. Others were made to sign a waiver and started at step 0. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent pattern or justified reason for the disparity. Maybe the HR director, the second highest paid district employee, could explain this to the tax payers and parents.
Maybe you could explain why you know so much about the district, as you don’t work there, you don’t have any real connections, and you don’t have any educational experience. Oh wait, you don’t know so much about the district. My bad. Again, this is an example of someone who isn’t in the trenches, and pretends to know what is going on. Why? who knows….but we all suspect. As teachers, we know who the good administrators are and were, and who the horrible ones are/were. Let’s face it, the ones that are claiming to sue the district, were inept and had no clue about what we face in the classroom and with state and federal mandates. How do I know this? They were both administrators in buildings I worked in. Rex, you’ve not a clue, and every word you print is one more bit of evidence you are part of the problem not part of the solution. I don’t love the superintendent, nor do I agree with everything that is happening. But I will tell you this, things are a hell of a lot better, and we teachers are actually getting classroom support now, rather than sympathetic smiles and empty promises. You want to go back to “the good old days?” Fine, go ahead, but don’t expect our jobs to survive.
thanks for saying all this. I don’t always agree with things Van Tassell does either, but are we better? No, we are paid less, BUT YES we have jobs thanks to him. He sometimes may be difficult to understand, but he is looking out for us and for our district. No one is perfect, and as I recall, we were in deficit two years ago. He fixed that. We won’t have a financial manager who will cancel our contracts. So love him or hate him, you owe him. He has saved our jobs. So shut up you people who are living in a bubble and don’t think the real world will affect you, because it will. I am not one of his “minions, ” but I am grateful every day to have a job. No one is perfect but he has the courage to stand up to stupidity. So Rex Mundi, you and your pals can go sue someone else. It seems to me that there are a lot of people defending Mr. V, and just two or three morons who don’t get it and attack him. Get something else to do, as we are moving forward.
Fact- 5 teachers gone from McBride due to lack of support. I’m not sure how you are getting support when that is the main complaint from teachers in the trenches. I try not to mention many other issues because they could drive students away from the district but people keep claiming I am something or someone that I’m not. I have worked in a school for several years but changed jobs in 2009. Since then I have followed the state of the education system in Michigan very closely. I have friends on several school boards and know many administrators in more than one district personally. They would all say that I am more than qualified to comment on these issues. If you were to read my comments with an open mind, you would see that my main complaints have been with minor security issues and unfair treatment of teachers by VanTass. The rest of the time, I seem to responding to people who are blindly worshiping an undeserving leader and attacking me for speaking out.
Pretty amazing how someone who doesn’t work for VB has such an ego they believe they are qualified to speak for all of us. Some people don’t like “Van Tass” yes it is true. But let them speak about it, not you. It seems like those who work for the district actually have spoken up, and in pretty fair numbers, in support of the changes that have been made. So take your ego and go elsewhere.
Frankly, all this fuss about the churn in the employee ranks is ridiculous. That turnover is perfectly normal, and in fact, lower than in years past. check your facts. Sure they are people who complain, and support the old ways, but they can take their horse and buggy mentality and find jobs at at districts that aren’t interested in survival. This is MICHIGAN. Gov. Snyder is not going to allow things to remain unchanged. There is no blind worship here, just common sense. Those five teachers from North who hit the road..good riddance. Lack of support? Please. What a lame excuse. If you don’t like “Van Tass”, that is just fine. But attacking a school district that is doing its damndest to survive is just suicide for the district and the community. “Van Tass” will move on eventually, but we will never go back to horse and buggy days. If we do, we are totally sunk. No one is attacking you, they are attacking your blind allegance to a lifestyle that is gone, and won’t be back. Hello charter schools, and good luck to all of us who will need to beg for jobs from them.
It’s you again Rex! Thrilled to read more of your creative writing!
I don’t think Rex is particularly entertaining. More ridiculous rhetoric.
WTF are you talking about? Nonsense.
See my comments below about your friends Karen Mida and Peggy Voit.
I’ve been reading through the comments by someone named Rex Mundi, and I continue to be astonished that he/she/it refuses to assign accountability to any employees for anything at all! The Van Buren Schools is not an employment agency, and employees have a responsibility to perform their jobs to the expectations of their employers. It isn’t the other way around. The employer sets the expectations, and if the employee can’t hack it, they are either removed or quit. I don’t think that asking district administrators and employees to meet high professional standards is unreasonable. It is Rex Mundi and his cronies who drag us down and keep us at a steady level of mediocrity. I am very proud of those district employees who do their best, and those who don’t should look for a job in a school system that welcomes mediocrity.
When have I ever advocated lower standards or expectations? I have not criticized even one educational change. No one would probably be attacking him right now if he knew how to work with ALL of his employees. Just as students have different learning styles, teachers respond in different ways to his demeanor and criticisms.
Henry Ford was a great innovator and businessman but he was also very stubborn and hired thugs to beat the employees into doing things his way. Mike Rice was a very successful coach at Robert Morris but he also learned that you can’t treat people like a bully at Rutgers. Hopefully VT learns this soon before more great teachers leave. You can’t treat them like dirt and cut their pay and expect them to stay around forever hoping things get better. I am not blaming VT for the pay cuts. I understand the reality of the financial situation. Education is a team sport where teachers, students, parents, administrators, and the community all have to perform on a high level to overcome the challenges we are facing.
So we have people out there suing the schools. It is always about greedy people who try and get something for nothing. How Christian is this Mr and Mrs. V? Does it bother you what your children and grandchildren will think of you? How do you think your parents will feel about this Mrs. M? What happened to ethics? The almighty dollar strikes again. Greed greed greed. I am so ashamed of you.
“5 teachers gone from McBride due to lack of support.” Excuse me, they left VOLUNTARILY. Lack of support? What a bunch of crybabies. Get a job in the real world like the rest of us. I work in the real world. I am evaluated constantly, and MUST perform, or I will be fired. You people are boo- hooing over lack of support, but you have no idea what it is like in the real workforce. You have a paycheck, insurance, weeks off during the year and the summer, a union that supports you, and a weekday work week, with no midnight shift, and a fantastic retirement plan. I would laugh if this wasn’t so damned pathetic. I am so sad that such a bunch of losers is in charge of the education of most our children. Not supported? Please. I am glad they quit, we don’t need this nonsense in our schools.
I had an email from a South Middle School teacher who says that Karen Mida is going to be one of the Belleville distinquished graduates. I am angry, appalled, saddened, disheartened and disgusted. This was obviously a rigged vote, as so many other deserving people were ignored. Shame of the school board for making this decision. Mida has been lipping off for months that she is suing the school district. The school board needs to put a stop to this, and stop it now. We are honoring someone who is suing the district? Disgraceful. I demand to know why the school board made this choice. Is this an attempt to appease Mida? This is a sham. The school board should be recalled if they allow this to happen. They are supposed to be the stewards of our tax dollars. Oh wait, Sherry Frazier and Brent Mikulski are “dear” friends with Mida. They supported her publicly when she was in trouble. That brings up another question, is President Mikulski encouraging Mida to sue, so he can approve a big fat settlement for his buddy? THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. THIS IS CRIMINAL. THIS IS UNETHICAL. THIS IS ILLEGAL. Mrs. Rosemary, please please investigate this outrage. Just flush our money down the drain, and ignore the fact that our students need books. Brent Mikulski and Sherry Frazier should resign and resign NOW. I am tired of the school board treating taxpayers like landfill sludge. Nepotism and favoritism are criminal acts from elected officials!
If this is true, school board members involved in this scandal should resign and or face prosecution. Time will show us who is righteous and who is a crook.
This is true we all got the message in our inboxes. I teach and I am proud. I am not proud of the behind the scenes crap from principals and ex principals. The Van Buren Schools board needs to wake up and smell the coffee. We are giving up a lot so the district allegedly can survive. Board President can you state truthfully that you are not good friends with her? Can you tell us truthfully that you don’t party together? Can you tell us truthfully that you and/or your wife have not taken trips together? The ethics on this school board are questionable at best, and choosing her for distinquished grad is pathetic. Shame on this entire school board.
Well said Pinfeather. Again, this is a case of the union fighting against change, and mustering defenders who are striking out in any way they can. There is no evidence, other than anecdotal, for their claims. There are many great teachers in the Van Buren district. There are also some that need to move on. For the sake of our students, let’s help them find other vocations. As for the lack of support comment, I agree. It is laughable! Again, Rex and “minions” are grasping at straws, as they don’t want to change. “Lack of support” makes me laugh every time I read it. They sound like a bunch of adolescents whining because they can’t go to the mall. Indeed, time for these people to grow up and put on their big boy pants!
What does the union have to do with this? It seems the union has no power or there would have been many more lawsuits filed already. You can’t fraudulently change someones professional evaluation after it has been submitted and not expect to get sued. And you don’t understand what lack of support means. It means that a parent can call the board office and claim a teacher did something without any proof except the word of their “innocent” child and teachers get write ups regardless of how crazy the claim might be. It means sending a student to the office because of serious discipline problem and the student being sent right back without any consequences.
So what do get from this? We get teachers and administrators that are afraid to take any chances or make any waves because of fear of the board office and parents. We get low moral and motivation that carries over to the students. When the students are not motivated, test scores and learning decrease. The cycle repeats. Good riddance to the teachers that left you say? Say goodbye to experience in classroom management and recognition of learning problems. You can’t just plug in new teachers fresh from college and think they will learn this on their own. You wouldn’t start a fire department or car company with only recent graduates. As far as the real world, great companies value their employees and try to keep them with in reason. No one is asking anyone to baby them, only treat them like human beings so they don’t need anxiety medication to go to work.
How come everyone that likes to comment about me offers no proof? They only claim that I am making things up or the I am doing this because of some imaginary link to some past that I do not care about.
The good old days are gone, when school board members were honest, hardworking and unselfish. Folks like Melvin Budd, Robert Fowler, Karl Gorham, David Peer, Victor Hogan, Ralph Nodwell, and Susan Callahan were people we could trust, and all are examples how how boards should behave, with dignity and fairness. I’ve been on this earth for nearly 70 years, and lived in Belleville all of them. I’ve seen good times and bad times, but the distinguished graduate choice thing takes the cake. A blatant thumb-your-nose disregard for what is right is what I call it. This ain’t a circus, it’s the clowns on the skool bored.
I am happy with Tyler and with Mrs. Pitt. There have been postive changes this year, and my daugher is learning faster and better. What I don’t like is that some members of board don’t always put school number one, but put individual interests number one. childrenand school should be first, not the union or principles who think they have been done wrong. Get over it the ones who are suing, and school board put schools first and put away your favorites. Since the old principles retired, I see good changes thanks to Vantassil. Schools and kids first. I don’t care if you don’t like Vantassil, you don’t have to like him. Superentendents who are popular can’t do a good job because they have too many friends.This seems to be true for board members. Friendships should be last, schools first. Get with it board.
Karen Mida’s nomination to distinguished graduate at BHS makes a mockery of the honor. The school board wasn’t responsible for this, it was Don Juchartz and his cronies on the distinguished grad committee. How sad that you people have stooped to this, and have made this honor nothing but a shallow recognition of someone who wants to beat the system. Distinguished graduate is no longer an honor and earned, it is bestowed on friends and family of the committee. This is a slap in the face of we BHS grads who truly have distinguished ourselves by honestly, integrity, hard work and true community service. Shame on all of you, where is YOUR integrity?
