Belleville Police Chief Gene Taylor, right, presented a Making a Difference award to Belleville High School student Tyler McCune during the April 26 meeting of the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education.
Chief Taylor said that on Feb. 17, Tyler and three other students noticed two subjects attempting to strip parked student vehicles in the BHS parking lot. He said people have to decide to turn a blind eye or help. “They chose to make a difference and called police and kept police informed of the subjects’ location,” Chief Taylor said. He said Sumpter and Belleville police apprehended the two fleeing subjects who were successfully prosecuted on larceny from auto charges. “Thanks for making a difference,” Chief Taylor concluded. Not present that evening to get their awards were Janessa Goins, Alexis Golden, and Luette Switzer.
