On page 3 in the June 6 edition of the Belleville-Area Independent we reported on the 43 employees, non-affiliated with unions, whose new wages would be voted on at the next school board meeting.
Superintendent of Van Buren Public Schools Pete Kudlak said most of the raises were $2,000 to $3,000, but Sean Garland got higher than most, as reported. Garland actually got $10,000 more, not the $18,000 reported, he said.
Supt. Kudlak said the Independent used the wages on the year-end report it prints at the beginning of each new year and that is not the full wage, which increases with the new school year. This accounted for the error, he said.
He said John Leroy and Jeff Moore got a little higher raises because in the district’s investigation of what other districts paid for those positions, they were found to be underpaid.
Kudlak said he did not mention his assistant Debbie McWilliams, but the Independent reported she, too, got a higher raise. He said she did not get the $10,000 raise report, but got a $3,000 raise.
We regret the confusion and apologize.
