A GoFundMe page was put out last week asking the public to help bury Blake Smith of Ypsilanti, the 11-year-old boy who died after being hit by a truck on Michigan Avenue at Denton Road in Van Buren Township on Aug. 31.
The boy’s uncle, William Stone of Canton Township, set up the page to help his sister bury her son. He set a goal of $10,000 and as of the morning of Sept. 6, almost $18,000 had been donated.
One person donated $600. There were comments on the web site about this accident being in the Denton neighborhood area and how residents could hear all the police vehicles, the ambulance, and other activities.
According to report, Blake was being driven to school by his mother and six-year-old sister at about 6:20 a.m. She was in the Michigan Avenue turnaround when her car died and they all got out of the vehicle. A driver using the turnaround didn’t see them because there were no lights. He reported crashed into the mother and daughter and the mother was knocked unconscious.
That’s when it appeared Blake ran for help across Michigan Avenue, where he was struck by a pickup truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The mother had injuries on her face and the little sister has broken ribs and bruises all over.
Both drivers involved stopped, according to reports.
