Since 1993, 1.67 billion pounds of food has been collected and donated to feed the hungry in America by the United States Postal Service. Over 3 million pounds of food was collected last year in Michigan and 9,000 pounds by the Belleville Postal Carriers.
This Saturday, May 11, will mark the Postal Service’s 27th food drive. All the food collected by our local Post Office will be donated to the Emergency Food Closet which feeds the hungry in Van Buren and Sumpter townships and the City of Belleville and is housed at the Belleville First United Methodist Church at 417 Charles St.
You can donate non-perishable food items on that day by placing items in plastic bags and marked “Stamp Out Hunger” by your mailbox. Your letter carrier will pick them up.
Volunteers are needed to transport the food from the Post Office to the church, as well as many hands at the church to check “freshness” dates, sort, box, and shelve. If you would like to help, there will be a short meeting at 11:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall before the food begins to arrive.
